I so have enjoyed consciously noticing the forces at play, even in creating and setting up The Road To Joy seminar. Even putting ‘The Road To Joy’ together has been a journey of personal transformation. An intimate knowledge of JOY, has been the road we have stood on for everyday decisions like creating and distributing the flyer, letting people know about the seminar, our two egos battling for importance against each other (you all know that everyone’s ego battles to feel significant – don’t you?!).

Physical decisions like how long to work for, tiredness, when and what to eat if we have a long meeting. Creative decisions like the initial brain-storming and mindmapping when I approached Phillip with a need I saw in my clients, and others that I spoke with. Every aspect of every interaction sits within the effects of the principles.

We had a couple of days, where neither of us were working or communicating well. That, in turn affected our ability to be dynamic in our work on this project. I wish you could have been flies on the wall to watch. As we talked with confidence to our clients about ‘The Road To Joy’, neither of us felt any joy at all. Exhaustion, anger, frustration, bleakness, dissillusioned would have summed it up better (is it ok to be as frank as that, or do I need to pretend that practitioners lives are perfect?!).

As we sank to the bottom of the murky waters as it were, where did my joy come from? From trust in immutable laws, that things would change. Not only that, but I could actively participate in the change, and predict the outcome. And sure enough the change came. Because we live these principles both personally and professionally, the turnaround was 24 hours and the JOY was enormous–a new level. This is not about thinking positively, orbeing ‘happy’. This is about sitting confidently in the middle of forces greater than self, bringing people- work contacts, intimate relationships, acquaintances– in to your life of similar depth and understanding, and enjoying the ride!

Whether you choose to consciously work with them, or not is irrelevant. The fact is they exist – and those of you who attend The Road To Joy seminar 12 July–will get an in-depth understanding of them. They are the univeral laws of nature – and similarly to gravity–you could say ‘I don’t believe it’, or ‘I don’t care’ – but ignore gravity and its effects and see what happens. The universe hangs together in some orderly fashion. Get the map Saturday 12 July Milton, Brisbane!

So we understand that e=mc2, and that all matter is compiled of mainly space mixed up with subatomic particles. What I want to know is what moves the whole show. I see title after title expounding the theory of no God. I see sociology proving that the human condition comes from everything that happens upon everything that happens. Psychology and psychiatry reach for an ability to fix everyone as though they are broken and pop them nice and tidy back in to normal society, well adjusted and contributing.

Then the new age of spiritual teachings pits one idea against the next: magic against logic, soul against ego, God against Goddess. What are we doing to ourselves? What is the stuff of life that all of these variant ideas and forms are trying to ply their trade in? What is the common denominator in all this? It is us the human being perhaps. We are the great Mystery that we are trying to unravel. The idea it seems to me all of these sciences are engaged in is how does life become, and support itself– as life. What underpins it all, and what is it as a medium that we inhabit?

I do hope that The Mystery remains just that. Where are the most fantastic leaps being taken? What I propose is this. It is our consciousness that asks the question, so perhaps that is the stuff we seek.

I am not restricted by any particular genre, I love classical, jazz, hip hop, rock trance and dance to name but a few of the avenues for my soul to get tumbling with. What is it about music that makes me so deeply moved? Why do I cry when listening to an opera and swing in silent content while the tension of a fine blues ictus stretches me? Because music touches me, it touches me deep.

Music can transform a mood or set a scene that defines an event. It is a language beyond words. I am not going to get in to a rave about the movement of energy or the understanding of vibration and if you pluck this note it will do this to one, and if you pluck it with this tension it will do this to you even though it is the same note. I said I wasn’t going to do a rave and there I go and do one.

These are but a few contributing areas one could discuss at great length as to what is going on while I am being transported by the sweet loud or raucous timbres. However I would like to share this simple and wonderfully pleasing thought. I don’t care why it moves me so. It is simply that it brings me great pleasure that I will continue to listen and dance and do all sorts of things to music, for it is the pleasure that I seek. The deep pleasure as I lie in a steaming hot bath listening to the second movement of any of Beethoven’s symphonies. The deep joy from any contribution to my life is what I seek.

To live from soul, to walk along the road even when exhausted, even when paralysed with utter bliss, to be touched deeply by the mere matter of existing. Music is but one of the many wonderful gifts that the human being has created to express the sweet pleasure and pain of life. To live with it all as it moves through and around you. That for me is joy. And being on that road is to walk on and on toward nowhere but the road. Phillip C Gordon Brisbane 2008. Does music move your soul?

For many years I worked as an actor. I say worked for two reasons.

Firstly it was my profession, how I earned my money and what I occupied my time with. Devoting my thoughts and creativity toward the discovery of ways to improve upon my craft, in order to increase the possibility of getting work and to foster in my self a certain eye and skill that I could employ as a conveyor of the truth. This latter explanation is what I wish to focus on, to convey the truth. Many think that being a successful actor mans being able to lie well, to create false images and perform well, to entertain. What that gives you is an entertainer.

An actor is in constant pursuance of the truth. For it is the truth which one seeks in order to lift a character off the page and on to the stage or screen so that what an audience sees is something of them reflected back. To reveal something of humanity, of our common themes, across all race and creed, to look into a mirror as it were and take heart in the sameness. Or perhaps observing some aspect of life that appears different, yet on closer inspection, shudders or humours one in to a realization beyond words or science, to bring a pause and reflection of the awe of being alive, and finding a deeper and more constant reality.

Even though I am not at this stage of my life engaged in that most wondrous of art-forms, it is clear to me that the same experience is what I want from life, and after working with many people over the last ten years as a facilitator in Personal Transformation, that it is what others seek. To live a life full and rich and alive, a life that lifts out of the rhythms that surrounds us and become truly revelatory and deeply meaningful.

What gives an actor this ability is a craft. Most people stumble though life holding on to broken beliefs in the hope that one day it will all come together. Like any artist, when we have a craft in our hands we can engage life with something that will keep us focused, yet allow us to tip over into the wonderful world of uncertainty and find a consistency. Life becomes art. We become the artist and the work…..
