Contemplations on The Road To Joy: Music

The Yellow Rose of FriendshipWhat do you love about music? I love music. I am not restricted by any particular genre, I love classical, jazz, hip hop, rock trance and dance to name but a few of the avenues for my soul to get tumbling with.  What is it about music that makes me so deeply moved?  Why do I cry when listening to an opera and swing in silent content while the tension of a fine blues ictus stretches me?   Because music touches me, it touches me deep.

Music can transform a mood or set a scene that defines an event.  It is a language beyond words.  I am not going to get in to a rave about the movement of energy or the understanding of vibration and if you pluck this note it will do this to one, and if you pluck it with this tension it will do this to you even though it is the same note.  I said I wasn’t going to do a rave and there I go and do one.

These are but a few contributing areas one could discuss at great length as to what is going on while I am being transported by the sweet loud or raucous timbres.  However I would like to share this simple and wonderfully pleasing thought. I don’t care why it moves me so. It is simply that it brings me great pleasure that I will continue to listen and dance and do all sorts of things to music, for it is the pleasure that I seek. The deep pleasure as I lie in a steaming hot bath listening to the second movement of any of Beethoven’s symphonies.  The deep joy from any contribution to my life is what I seek.

To live from soul, to walk along the road even when exhausted, even when paralysed with utter bliss, to be touched deeply by the mere matter of existing. Music is but one of the many wonderful gifts that the human being has created to express the sweet pleasure and pain of life. To live with it all as it moves through and around you. That for me is joy. And being on that road is to walk on and on toward nowhere but the road. Phillip C Gordon Brisbane 2008.  Does music move your soul?
